Conditional Formatting
Overview
Conditional formatting allows you to apply a color to the cell of any numeric data point, including Scorecard columns. Conditional formatting cannot be applied to columns displaying text or symbols, and you cannot use the conditional formatting tool to color the number in a cell; the background of the cell has the conditional formatting applied to it. A palette of colors is available; you cannot create a custom color for conditional formatting. The multicolor option applies a gradient fill to all numbers within the selected column.
To use conditional formatting, select the column (or use All Numeric Columns to have conditional formatting applied to all columns with a number), define the operator and value range, then choose a color to apply to that rule.
Use the Action icon at the end of a rule’s row to Duplicate a rule, and save yourself some time from having to reselect values for every field for additional rules for the same column. You can also click the Add Formatting Rule button to create a new rule either for the same data point, or a new one.
Remember to click Apply in the lower-right corner of the Peer Analysis panel to apply the rules you have created.
Alternate Uses
Consider creating a set of four rules—each one using a different color—to denote the quartile assignment for funds within their Morningstar Category with the Total Return % Rank in Category columns. That is, funds whose Total Return % Rank in Category is less/equal to 25 would be green, those less /equal to 50 would be yellow, those less/equal to 75 would be orange, and those greater than 75 would be red.
Conditional formatting remains applied to data you export to Microsoft® Excel®.
