Overview

A component is a chart or table used to display and analyze MorningstarSM data for selected objects. Each component provides a unique functionality to assist you in your custom workflows. Whether you are monitoring intraday security prices, comparing two funds’ asset allocations, or analyzing a portfolio’s exposure to various stock sectors, a component can display the data.

You can access more than 40 unique components in Morningstar DirectSM Cloud.

Types of Components

Components are categorized as follows:

Portfolio components are specific to analyzing portfolios, such as client accounts, model portfolios, and custom benchmarks, and are available only in portfolio workbooks.

Investment components are specific to analyzing investments, such as equities, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds, and are available only in investment workbooks.

Market monitoring components are specific to analyzing markets, such as regional markets, commodities markets, and so on.

Additionally, within the Component Library, components are grouped into categories such as Allocation, Holdings, and so on.

Focus

A component displays data for a selected object, which is referred to as the object in focus. The object can be an equity, a fund, a portfolio, or a market, although some components (such as the Grid and Watchlist) require a list or screen to be the focus.

To focus a worksheet’s components on an object, select the object in the Grid component. The selected object becomes the focus, and the components reflect its data and other related information.

Component-Level Focus via Search

In some components (such as Basic Performance), you can search for a security and put it in focus directly from the component header. This allows you to focus on a single security for each component.

To search for a security and put it in focus, do the following:

1.In a component such as Basic Performance, at the left of the component header, click the Search icon. The Search dialog box opens.

2.Enter the security identifier (name, ticker, SecID, and so on). A list opens, displaying securities matching the search criteria.

3.Select a security to make it the focus of the component.

4.To focus on a different security in a different component, repeat steps 1–3, using the Search icon in the second component’s header.

Lists and Screens

Some components require a list or screen to be the focus. For instance, the Grid and Watchlist components display a list or screen instead of information about a specific item in the list or screen.

While viewing a list or screen, in the Grid View header, click the name of the list or screen. The Lists & Screens menu opens. From there, you can open a different list or screen, create a new list or screen, save changes you have made to the currently displayed list or screen, or save a copy of the currently displayed list or screen.

Buttons with Menus

In the component area, some components display one or more buttons used to access a menu. These buttons display a down arrow at the right.

Some of the buttons with menus are as follows:

Date range

Frequency, and

Indicators.

When you click a menu button, a menu opens. Select an option from the menu. Your selection is reflected in the component.

Buttons in a Switch

In the component area, some components display a series of related buttons in a switch. Some of the buttons in switches are as follows:

Gainers/Losers/Most Actives

Chart/Table, and

1D, 1W, 1M.

When you click a button in a switch, the component refreshes to display your selection.

Switches

Some components display one or more switches. Common switches include Chart/Table (to change from one view to the other) and time period (to select among common time periods, such as 1D, 1M, and so on).

On a switch, click the button for your selection.

Edit Mode

On a worksheet, to add or delete a component, the worksheet must be in Edit mode.

To put a worksheet into Edit mode, in the upper-right corner of the window, click Edit. On the right side of the window, the Component Library opens.

In Edit mode, the right portion of the worksheet is hidden by the Component Library. To close the Component Library (exit Edit Mode), in the upper-right corner of the window, click Done.

Add a Component to a Worksheet

To add a component to a worksheet, do the following:

1.To enter Edit Mode, click Edit. The Component Library opens. The options available in the Component Library are based on your entitlements (see Data Entitlement) and the type of object (portfolio, investment, list, screen, or market) being analyzed.

2.Drag a component from the Component Library to the worksheet. An area opens on the worksheet to display the component. Existing components resize to accommodate the new component.

3.To exit Edit Mode, click Done.

Delete a Component from a Worksheet

To delete a component from a worksheet, enter Edit Mode Then, in the upper-right corner of the component header, click X.

Other components on the worksheet resize to occupy the now-empty area.

Resize a Component Area

To resize a component area, hover the cursor on the border between two components. A blue line appears. Drag the line to add space to one component area while taking space away from the other.

Component Settings

In Component Settings, you can make selections affecting only that component. The available settings vary depending on what the component is meant to display.

To access a component’s settings, do the following:

1.If you are in Edit Mode, click Done (above the Component Library).

2.In the component header, click the Component Settings icon. A menu opens. In many components, the Component Settings menu is divided into two or more sections. The most common sections are Component Settings (for options such as Time Period and Benchmark) and Display Settings (for options such as Data View and Holdings Identifier Display).

3.Make a selection from the menu. Many selections have a sub-menu, indicated by a right-facing arrow (>).

When you save the workbook, the new settings are also saved.

Zoom In/Zoom Out

To enlarge or reduce the component display within the component area, click the + or  button on the Zoom switch. The Zoom switch may be located in the component header or at one side of the component.

For example, when the Global Markets Barometer is viewed as a map, the Zoom switch is at the right side of the component. When zoomed in, you can drag the map to focus on a specific region or country.

Reset

When a component is zoomed in or out (see Zoom In/Zoom Out), you can reset it to its original display by clicking the Reset (curved arrow) icon.

Expand/Collapse

To expand a component area to occupy the full worksheet space, you must first exit Edit Mode (if you are in it). Then, at the right side of the component header, click the Expand icon.

To return the component area to its original size, at the right side of the component header, click the Collapse icon.

Sort in Table View

In table view, you can sort on any column. Click a column heading and the rows sort in ascending order, based on that column. To sort the rows in descending order, click the column heading again.

View Data for a Specific Point in Time or Investment in Chart View

In chart view, you can display the data for a specific point in time or investment by pointing at that position on a line or bar in the chart. A flag opens, displaying information pertinent to that point in the display.

Date, Portfolio Date, Date Range, or Time Period

In many components, the date, portfolio date, date range, or time period currently in use is displayed in the component header. The smallest increment allowed is daily.

Each component offers one of the following options for changing the date or date range:

a selection from a button menu (Buttons with Menus)

a button on a switch (Switches), or

a selection from the Component Settings menu.

Frequency or Data Frequency

The frequency (monthly, quarterly, and so on) of displayed data. To change this setting, do one of the following:

If a button displays the data frequency (as in the Advanced Performance Chart), click it and select from the menu.

If the frequency is highlighted on a switch (as in the Basic Performance Chart), click the button on the switch for the frequency you want; or

If Frequency or Data Frequency is an option in the Component Settings menu, select it from the menu.

The menu options vary, depending on the date range of the chart. For instance, if the date range is less than one month, the frequency options are expressed in minutes.

When viewing larger date ranges on a line chart, you can smooth the data display by selecting Monthly, which is an option when the date range is six months or more.

Benchmark or Display Benchmark

Select a benchmark to compare holdings against a Morningstar benchmark, account, custom benchmark, model portfolio, and so on. Typically, this is a selection in Component Settings. You can also search for a benchmark or choose not to display a benchmark.

The benchmark options are usually grouped as follows:

Search

By Relevancy

User Created, and

No Benchmark.

Comparison

Some components can focus on multiple objects, allowing for comparisons among them. The Comparison setting can be found in the Component Settings (as it is in the Return Growth component) or a Search field (as it is in the Advanced Performance component).

Data View

Change the display from a chart to a table, or vice versa. Typically, this is a selection in Component Settings.

Export Component Data

In most components, you can export the data to Microsoft® Excel® for further analysis. Some components also allow you to export to CSV.

To export the component data, do the following:

1.Exit Edit Mode (if you are in it).

2.In the component header. click the Data Export icon. The Data Export menu opens.

3.Select Excel (or CSV, if it’s available and that is your preference). If you select Excel, a new spreadsheet opens in your Microsoft Excel application.
